3dr dizzy
Having an intermittent fault on my 3dr car can be fine for 2-3 hours take it out the next day and i get a sort of misfire still probably only once in say an hours drive.
Took the dizzy cap off a couple of weeks ago and the plastic around the centre electrode
had started to melt, 3 of the outer electrodes looked ok they slightly scorched from the rotor arm but the fourth had a line cut through it from the rotor.
Put an old dizzy cap on and it was fine for about 4 runs took cap off and no melting on the centre electrode but same problem on the outer one.
Bought brand new cap and rotor and was fine for an hour the 5 mins from home 1 misfire.
When the cap was off i noticed that the shaft where the rotor goes on has play in it from side to side and up and down and was wondering if anyone knows if or how much play there should be.

The amount of play you should have is ZERO, obviously there is a gao, but it is so slight if you can see it, it is needing a repair.
A lot have some play, which is no problem, so long as it is not doing as yours is and touching the dizzy cap, as you can just gap a bit wider on phase.
You will find that the dizzy shaft has picked up on the top bush in the dizzy body which is a quality piece of shit engineering, normally ok but certainly a lot do go in this way.
I mod them by fitting a OILIGHT bush, this is as it's name implies a self lubing bush, in place of the oe one which is a crushed iron particle bush, the oe one is ok unless it gets seriously hot.
The misfires normally start with a partial misfire noticed in reverse, as the revs drop lower.
The mod is about £35, but is a permanent fix.

Hi tabetha,
How hard is it to do the mod then, are you saying you would do it for me if i sent you the dizzy.
Am thinking of getting a brand new dizzy being as this one is possibly 22 years old.

I am not accurate enough to do these as not a machinist or anything, I had a go, it all worked ok, but did not want to chance it, so let me mate do it who is a full time machinist, though he himself farmed it out to another guy who makes handbuilt steam ships locos etc to order.
A new one is an option, and would be ok, depends how much you want to spend.
I could get it done no problem if you wanted.

Cheers for that i'll have a think about it.
Thought getting a new one has got to be better than recon being as this ones lasted 20 odd years, there £175.00 from Burton prower.
