i just did mine yesterday.i dont think it would be possible unless you could rig up a lever and push down on the spring doing 2 cylinders at a time with the engine at tdc, that would stop the valves dropping down, but i think you would need 2 very small pairs of hands,2 to hold the lever and 2 to fit the collets.

There is a tool that i used to use when i worked for fords that bolted onto the cylinder head which comprised a lever which you pulled down to compress the spring and remove the collets.
Not sure if this was a ford special tool.
You may be able to do it in situ with the said tool if you attach an air line adapter to the spark plug hole and pressurise the cylinder to stop the valve dropping (if you have access to a compressed air source).
Not tried this myself but have heard of it being done this way.

Try www.sjdiscounttools.com
They seem to do a couple of spring compressors that dont require head removal and also the airline adapter too.
They're nothing like the one i know though so dont know how good they are.![Confused](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_confused.gif)
I'm sure if you did a bit of digging you could find one!

Why don't just remove the head?
Done in a couple of hours.
When i have changed valve seal on YB, Zetec etc. i have used a special tool i have borrowed from work (Ford). This tool boltet to the head, compresses the valve spring from the top, kind of similar to the tools shown above. But the main problem is mensioned, and that is to keep the valve in closed position.
When the head is removed i have had to fill the combustion chamber with paper/rubber etc. and lock the head to the bench.
Its quite hard to stop the valves from opening, and i would not have tried this with the head on.
Done in a couple of hours.

Right as col_cos1 i saying.
Removing the head wouldn't creat a need for planing.
If you measure the head when its removed, and it needs planing, then its really a good thing that you find out. because it would have been in need of planing when it was mounted too.
Would recommend to do it properly the first time.
If the head needs planing it doesnt requires more parts removing than
the job with the valve seal replacement.
