oil cooler
hi
want to fit a 19 row oil cooler to my 450 bhp 4x4 saff,the advice i need
is should i remove the heat exchanger on the side of the engine and
come straight off the block or leave it in place and fit a take off up
at the filter end

obviously you can do either, but on mine i have left the heat exchanger alon and fitted a sandwhich plate behind the filter, although you do need to cut off a few threads in order to allow the sandwhich plate to seal properly, which is a right pain to get to as it is not big enough to fit a hacksaw in

i replaced the heat exchanger (i don't have much use for it. It's on trackdays mostly, so once on temp, it's ok for the whole day) with the oilcooler takeoff. (placed the coolanthose directly into the rear of the block) and placed a 13row in front (left bottom) of the rs500style intercooler. (needed to grind of a bit on the inside of the bumper)

just remember you WANT the oil temp to be at around 100degrees as this is the temp it will evaporate water. most cars dont get oil anywhere near that temp, oil will start to break down at around 120 ish depending on oil type so you dont want to go over that temp, its a fine balance, but alot of big power cars only make 110deg on track, so you may be waisting your time mate

Most cars run at 30/40 degress HOTTER oil than water, as oil does as much cooling as the water.
A quality synthetic will remain much more stable and retain it's viscosity when hot, AMSOIL recently did lots of test which were very suprising.
I used to regularly see 130C after a run of just 10 fast miles in my xr4i, which had the modine cooler, and it took ages to come down as well.

its happens by the heating up/cooling down process ,condensation in other words. if you have a breather kit on the car, take a look inside the tank and it will have white scum in it, this is oil mixed with water, if you could always get the oil over 100 degrees, this wouldnt happen half as much
