Best Mods for a 170

What mods have you guys found for the st170 over the years that actually improove the car in driving and looks rather than just bling bolt ons ? Just a curiosity thing ;-)
I have run these cars on 18s and they handle poor in compared to OE 17s and coil overs unless for track use are terrible to live with as a daily driver, so whats your input

Pitbull69 11-01-2016 06:40 AM

I got a CFM 67 mm Throttle body, car felt more responsive, look wise I prefer the collection bumpers, got a Collection rear in body shop atm,

STeve 11-01-2016 06:45 AM

I have had a couple of those those 67s recently and simply sold them on, and I broke a collection back in september as bumpers are a closer match to the US svt model be interesting to see once completed

Pitbull69 11-01-2016 06:48 AM

I went to the body shop with a reiger bumper extension to get fitted onto my standard bumper, on the way there my fuel pump decicded to die, so was cheaper to get collection bumper resprayed than my bumper resprayed + extension sprayed and fitted.

Hopefully should have it back later this week. but gotta get fuel pump sorted before I can pick it up

I also have a bluefin remap on mine, but debating going for a proper map specific for the mods on my car.

STeve 11-01-2016 06:52 AM

bluefin is ok for standard cars, but once things like throttle exhaust and filter are changed a proper map is the way to go

Pitbull69 11-01-2016 06:55 AM

Yes to all of the above, decat should be fitted this week to weather permitting, the bluefin apparantly helps with induction and exhaust, but only generic, as there are so many induction kits and filters it cant perform best for them all, just finding the right people to do it,

Also dont want to map it then decide I want more mods done after.

STeve 11-01-2016 07:01 AM

decat on the 170 does make them way too noisy for my liking, and as for induction kits also never been a fan unless enclosed with high flow cold air feed isolating them from under bonnet heat soak or they run crap in warm weather or high running temps, if planning more engine mods then maybe a aftermarket ecu with various maps, people like MSD are best to speak too, just stay well clear of jamcock in northampton

Pitbull69 11-01-2016 07:06 AM

You probably wont like the noise of mine then, I have an RS Mongoose exhaust on, which is fairly loud as it is, but my cat split and I refused to pay the extorianate prices of a new one, and been told after market cats dont last more than a month, I have gone with a resonated De-Cat so hopefully its a little quiter.

I have a Pipercross viper induction, with cold air feed in my lower grill, plenty of cold air, just with the current weather have to carry a screwdriver for removing it if the puddles get to much.

Will look into MSD< heard them mentioned a few times now, Was also thinking of dreamscience as heard a lot of good things with them and Ford in the past.

Glenn_ 11-01-2016 07:41 AM

Good thread this. I dont think there is many mods that can be done to the ST17O.

So when people decat the STs i take it the engine light comes on.

Pitbull69 11-01-2016 08:43 AM

I have a 90 degree Lambda fooler to put on with the decat, should stop EML from coming on.

STeve 11-01-2016 08:44 AM

I have run mine with OE cat/decat and sports cat and out of the 3 the sports cat won hands down as it allowed more air flow without making sound like a saxo with a jap can on it, also on the dyno run the decat and sports cat were the same hp too ;-), MSD are in blackpool so not a million miles from you fella and one of the best in the business for all manner of things,

Pitbull69 11-01-2016 08:47 AM

Thankfully I didnt go with decat for power, just to save a few quid buying a new cat,

Will be checking MSD out once I get this fuel pump sorted

Would you know anywhere to get a fuel pump and sender unit that wont destroy the bank, just been garage and the only place that could get them was ford for £350+

STeve 11-01-2016 08:50 AM

MSD again for that I would have thought gotta be worth a call and passionford members get % as Stu is admin of this site, if I fit the supercharged engine I will be driving up to MSD myself

Pitbull69 11-01-2016 08:58 AM

have you got a link to there site, I keep getting an American site when I google them,

STeve 11-01-2016 09:21 AM

yeah sure its http://www.motorsport-developments.co.uk/ be sure to mention passionford as Stu is the boss and he is the boss of this site too, or matt lewis

Ive seen them. You can get them off ebay for 8 quid or from pumaspeed for about 40 quid lol

Glenn_ 11-01-2016 11:08 AM

When removing the air box resonater (or however its spelt) do the can use more fuel.

Pitbull69 11-01-2016 11:08 AM

thats the ones, I got mine from Ebay, was an extra quid for stainless, but still for a tenner, much better than puma speed

I never got that far, put my pipercross on straight away, but from what I have read it wont use more fuel, but if you like the noise, you will. play with the loud pedal more and so use more fuel.

STeve 11-01-2016 11:24 AM

economy is not too bad glenn as I removed the resonator box but installed the SVT trumpet and a high flow panel filter as this gave best results on the dyno with wind machine going

Glenn_ 11-01-2016 05:33 PM

Im suprised the trumpet doesnt draw in a bit warm air.

I got a trumpet from work but the ST air box base is different lol. The trumpet wont go in the hole cause its too small.

you have to enlarge the hole, pretty sure there are the markings o nthe airbox showing where to cut out too

Yeh i noticed the mark on the air box.

I spent a fortune on my old ST170, hands down the best modification I ever did was fitting a lightened fly and stage 3 clutch and clutch plate, next was retarding the timing -6 and then a short throw shifter to speed up the gear changes.
I had underdrive pullies on mine and they definitely helped and I never had a problem with harmonics.
With all my mods on the car I could just about get my 0-60 time into the 6's and pulled a GPS top speed of 147mph on a private track

Glenn_ 14-01-2016 03:26 PM

How much was the fly wheel. You you adjusted the timing did that give you a bit more performance.

STeve 14-01-2016 04:08 PM

all boils down to what you require the car for, if its track use and you have the money the world is your oyster but if you simply want a nippy clean example then theres other options, for me having a car with a perfect clutch makes no sense to rip it out due to fancying a change

Glenn_ 14-01-2016 07:24 PM

Mines just my daily driver. The cossie for performance.

Sp3no 18-01-2016 12:26 PM

The Stage 3 clutch came as part of the kit, the part that bought the car alive was the lightened flywheel, the difference was huge.
Yes i adjusted the Exhaust Cam timing, you cant go more than -8 degrees but you wouldn't want too. Adjusting the timing of the exhaust cam basically pushes your powerband higher up the rev range so the car pulls hard all the way to the red line which was 7750 on mine.
You may bog down a bit trying to launch at low rpm but if you give it a good amount of revs before dropping the clutch you went off like a scalded cat.

STeve 18-01-2016 02:11 PM

yes defo worth while if your replacing a clutch, but a lot of expense if your chasing just numbers

Glenn_ 20-01-2016 06:08 PM

Did it take you long to change the clutch/flywheel.

Sp3no 21-01-2016 01:18 PM

DId it over a weekend but I cleaned and painted the hubs etc as I went along so essentially it could be done allot quicker. A gearbox support bracket was essential

Glenn_ 21-01-2016 02:16 PM

Did you do the job on the floor then.

I wish there was a mod to stop the lambda sensors from bringing the eml on the dash.

Ive thought about getting another cat and chopping the guts out of mine. Or buy a cheap decat pipe.

Pitbull69 21-01-2016 02:21 PM

Literally just picked mine up from garage after having my decat fitted, (my cat was split) sounds nice, maybe a tad to loud,

Only thing I noticed was driving home, it gets to 5k, and doesnt move for a second or 2, then carries on to red line,

STeve 21-01-2016 02:27 PM

decat is ok if run with a system like a scorpion but with single box systems like millteks they can be way too loud

Glenn_ 21-01-2016 08:03 PM

A decat is a no no then lol.

Pitbull69 21-01-2016 08:10 PM

I have a Mongoose exhaust from an RS on mine, 1 small silencer on the back, but I do have a resonated cat, But im debating getting a small silencer made up for it, will see how the next few days driving goes

STeve 22-01-2016 01:26 PM

it got on my nerves the noise which is one of the reasons I went from milltek single box to scorpion triple box as it gave it back a quality sound

Pitbull69 22-01-2016 02:38 PM

TBH after today, I might start looking to see if anyone wants to trade exhausts, failing that I might get it booked into an exhaust place and get a silencer added after the downpipe,

Glenn_ 14-02-2016 07:23 PM

So if i leave the standard exhaust on and cut the decat out will the exhaust be louder.
