2nd, 4th and 6th Gears won't engage correctly
Car: ST170 2002
Flywheel and Clutch changed October 2012
All 4 Discs and brake pads renewed and changed last week
Just in case it's the cause of something above ^^
Ok here goes, just visited McDonalds and once we finished our meal I drove off
Driving a few metres, I went from 1st to second but the gear stick would hardly go in, it went down but only just and as I pressed on the accelerator there was nothing no power or anything, this was the same for 4th and 6th
So basically we get no power from 2nd, 4th or 6th, the gear stick engages but only just (usually it goes down further)
It's like the top row works but the bottom row nothing
Arghhhhhh

Wahay!! I've lost my Virginity!!
Check your gear selectors ,I'm not familiar with the 6 speed box in an st170,but on other models of foci they use two gear selectors and the end of these selector are plastic with small teeth on one edge.
Over time these teeth wear and don't engage properly ,there is an easy way to check they are operating correctly and this is by getting someone too manually select 1-6 gears while you look at your selectors on the gearbox side ,if you see the selector cable moving but without engaging the correct gear then you have located the problem.
You can remedy the problem by drilling a small hole through the selector and cable and inserting a split pin ,many cars were recalled by ford too remedy this problem some main dealers used cable ties
Hope this helps

As said more than likely going to be selector cables judging by the gears that dont work all need the same movement (gearstick pulled towards rear of car)
Pretty easy to swap for a replacement set, hardest part is getting them out the hole under dash then back in again. Will be difficult on a jack so try and use a ramp if you can!
Cables will come out of the car then onto the front of the gearbox under a black cover if there anything like the normal focus engines.

Discovered what it was
I had previously had a sub fitted and the guy ran the power wire behind the air box
This had fallen down and lodged itself behind the gear selector nob
DOH !!!!
