Default Remote Central Locking woes

Have searched the forum and not found an answer so hoping someone might be able to help.
I have a 2001 1.6 Zetec (in the UK) & the problem is the remote central locking has stopped working. Previously when it packed up I replaced the battery and it was good from 20 or 30 yards. It slowly got worse and stopped altogether – I tried two new batteries but didn’t work – so next I tried re0programming the remote but when I followed the instructions the car went into program mode ok (1st chime) but when I pressed one of the buttons on the remote the second chime didn’t happen and when I tried it afterwards it didn’t work. Next I removed the relevant panels and unplugged all the plugs to the GEM unit and left for an hour or so and then replaced it all and tried again but nothing and tried re-programming but nothing.

I have taken the remote fob apart and can’t see anything obviously wrong – nothing fell out and the microswitches still click etc.
My guess is the remote fob has packed up so two key queries:-
1. Is there anything that commonly goes wrong with the fobs that can be fixed – I can do most things just don’t know what to do.

2. Before I buy a replacement fob - is there any way I can test is it actually the remote fob that’s packed up and not the GEM unit (or anything else) – obviously I want to avoid buying a replacement remote fob and it not solving the issue.

3. When I investigate getting a replacement fob (the PN of mine is 98AG15K601AC) I see on e-bay that the same PN with AA, AB or AD at the end are also available – can I use these variants or do I need to get the AC version only ?

4. I would be quite happy to buy a second hand remote and re-program it (save myself a few bob). I understand it is possible to re-program a second hand one to do the remote central locking but someone told me that I wouldn't be able to re-program the immobiliser chip to my car to allow me to start it – is this true ? If so I assume the only thing you can do is remove the immobiliser from my old one and put it in the new one or stop being so dam tight and buy a brand new one.

Thanks for reading and any help appreciated
