Default ecu query

hi,
i have a question, my engine failed a short time ago in my 1.8 focus mk1.5 2003. i wont go into it here.
i have been offered a low milage 2.0 engine from a local breakers for a really good price.
i can get it fitted for next to nothing as well, but my questin is this...
do i need to replace the ecu for a 2.0 or will my current 1.8 ecu be fine???
if i need to replace the ecu, what else would i need?? keys etc.
any help or advice is welcome.

A 2.0 litre engine will run fine on the 1.8 PCM as long as you fit the 1,8 fuel injectors. The PCM will just thinkits breathing better!

You'll also need to fit the 1.8 flywheel and clutch (using new bolts) to suit the IB5 gearbox as the 2.0 is usually mated to a MTX75 box.

If the 2.0 engine is from a Mondeo there can be minor differences in manifolds and sensors, so swapping from your dead engine may be needed.

I know this works because, for testing purposes only, I ran a FRS engine on a 1.8 PCM. It was fine until the boost came in.

thanks for that,
i'l speak to the garage that will fit it and get them to change the injectors over, i will be keeping the ib5 box for the time being. the engine is from a 2.0 ghia i think but deffo know its from a focus.
will it be fine to keep it like that or would it be best to at some point after the summer to get the mtx75 box, put the 2.0 injectors on and get the correct ecu?

Although some people have blown IB5 boxes, its usually due to massive power increases from turbo or supercharger. It is after all the same series as being used still in the ST150 Fiesta, though I wonder what Jamsport did to it on their 300bhp one......the gear gaps are a bit better on the MTX for the extra torque, but I've always found the change a bit slower due to the double syncro....not that one races or sprints.....

If you want to fit an MTX its quite straight forward, but unlike the engine just about every ancillary needs changing. Driveshafts, engine bearing bracket, gear lever and cables, clutch pipe/hose, etc..

Obviously the injectors give a bit less petrol than 2.0 ones but you can easily increase the power around 25% and still not max them out. Again swapping the PCM can be straight forward, but......apart from really knowing its taken from a 2.0, and uses the same number of Lambda sensors, (don't know if pre/post facelift is impt,so assume it is) you need 2 keys in case you later need to code another one without paying Ford (or a specialist). You carefully swap the transponders (might need surgery of the fob) for the PATS to your keys.

That's the easy bit........The Focus PCM security shield is the best one I've come across on a Ford. 16 gauge steel, break off head bolt. Your garage will hate you.

So for those reasons, as for one I'm helping a mate to do soon, I'd just leave it unless your planning on further tuning and lots of money
