Default 1.8TDCI 2002. Thrust bearing.

Have just bought a cheap focus tdci at auction. (Private buyer) and my mechanicky mate tells me the thrust bearing has gone. Is this common fault or am I one of the first up to 95k?

I have also got a misfire that is going to be diagnosed.

Does the engine have to come out to get at the clutch?

Thanks

How can he tell its gone without taking the box off and inspecting it? And no the engine doesn't need to come out to take the box off...

Rich, I am NOT a mechanic, but there is a definate change in the engine note when you depress the clutch pedal to the floor and its out of gear.

They do whirr a bit anyway, especially when cold. If it were mine I wouldn't worry about it. All my opinion though, if you want to get it done for peace of mind then you may aswell.

I'd be changing the dual mass flywheel too while the box i off, these are a nightmare on the tdci's.

OK thanks. I am going to sort out the misfire first because the symptoms might become less when the engine is running sweetly and then I will probably be able to live with it. Thanks for the flywheel tip.
