pain in the backside mate! you will need to ideally take off the the bolt holding the bottom arm at the bottom of the spring...but as normal focus style, they are probably siezed on...which will mean new bushes time as you wont get them out without damaging them!
I gave up on mine and took them to a place with a ramp who put a big bar over the spring while someone put as much weight on the wheel as possible to give it extra room and wedge it out...dangerous but thats the only option we had without taking the car off the road till new bushes arrived!

As above, undo the shock bolts and the arb, then put spring compressors inside the spring (there is a big hole in the bottom cup you can put them up through), tighten then up and out it comes!

50mm would be ok. Maybe lower on Coilovers.
The best option is the Eibach springs. You can buy them from Fords to no problems with warrenty. They only lower it 30mm, but are very highly recomended on FFOC. A big improvement espically with 17"s. 30mm is ok to still use standard shocks, but if any lower, the shocks would need to be upgraded.
My 2 Focus's both had the Eibach's. They were great. Looked fantastic even when I took the 17"s off and put the standard 15"s back on. Very low.
