Mk1 rear handbrake cable drum model

To replace the rear handbrake cable can I just release it from the backplate and prise the rear cable from the metal join bracket or does the whole cable assembly need to be removed? It has a separate cable at the rear.

 

Just let you know you can do it this way I managed it this morning
