my friend has a 1.6 mk1 with a few issues

firstly when ignition is swiched on the digital display reads test and the needles max out and return?

secondly the clutch peddle feels ok but sometimes it wont go into gear but only intermitantly , if car is switched off and restarted it might then be ok?

 

The dials sweeping can be a sign of the alternator on its way out, I would carry out a voltage check on that and the battery.

The clutch issue could be a few things but I'm guessing it could be the slave cylinder or perhaps the fluid level is down ?

the trip computer does'nt work but the miles do? can these clocks just be switched over for another set? just be plugged in?

 

well the gearbox was removed yesterday to reveal a very knackered clutch and flywheel, someone had fitted the clutch the wrong way and minced everything!! springs falling out and flywheel face looked like an old brake disc!
