I have the same problem with my Orion Mk1 S2 RST. If I get stuck in traffic the temp goes up exactly below the red mark. The only difference is that the engine doesn't cut out, but if I switch it off at that moment I get the radiator water coming out. I think the problem is because the exhaust manifold and the turbo are too close to the radiator.

Next week I'm going to install a different fan switch and a turbo heat shield. I will also be checking the radiator and if it results in any minor problem I will put it the Pace Alloy Rad. Try doing these things mate. You can also change the expansion tank to a S2 one.

orion rs: The Orion mk1 has a softer spring in the expansion tank cap as the S1.

Try taking the Thermostat out altogether. In this weather it won't matter if you have one in. You should notice a big difference in the temp.

Cheers

People do it but I wouldn't advise it. I't don;t matter about the weather, it wont let the engine get up to temps properly and is not a good idea imo

I'd rather the car run cooler than overheating all the time but you could try getting a Thermostat that opens up at a cooler temperature.

You are better off getting a Thermostat for it but I havn't had any problems with my car since I dropped the Thermostat out of it.

Cheers

Have you tried a lower degree stat? I have a 82 degree in mine instead of the standard 88 degree, how about installing a fan switch so you can manually control when the fan comes in to so you can bring it in earlier well before it gets to a dangerous level in traffic. Also, have you tried another header tank, or flushed the rad and checked for cold spots etc?
