I'd use washing up liquid and fit the mount from under the car instead of going top to down.

Use a spatula(automotive tool), or a flat screwdriver with masking tape to protect the paint. This way you can prise the edges up and over the strut top.

Have you tried letting the weight of the car down onto it then try putting the nut on top

So the same as flo-flex then? if thats the case if fit the bottom bit under first then put the top bit on then used a spatula to fit the top to the bottom bit, this was done while on axle stands. as the car was still in its resto period i had to hammer the hub upwards to knock the thread up so the nut will fit.

I put the car down on its wheels n rolled it back and forth until the shock "settled" into the new mount and poked through enough to get the nut fully on then tightened it up accordingly, i checked it after afew hundred miles of driving n it was loose too, since ive re-tightened it its been fine!
