yes the pressure will drop around that tappet and so will have poor lubrication, best to take cam out and inspect it and lifters. check the sleves for marks. if a tappet is hard to remove then dont force it as this will damage the sleave, it will have to drop out the bottom. its more than likely the cam and lifters though

could be silly question but does an uprated cam need different lifters to match or are they the same as standard

No, uprated cams vary. Alot of Kent & Pipers selection use hydraulics. Newman only do solids now (they did do a hydraulic but it was shit and killed a few engines with swarf (mine included )).

That said, the lifters that come with Kent are absolutely shite! When i was using their cams i used to source other lifters rather than using their supplied items. Piper ive never used so cant comment

As said above more than likely a worn cam, you can get pattern cams new with lifters pretty cheap now...

Whatever you do , you will need to fit a new cam with new lifters.
You cannot mix:
Old cam new lifters
New cam old lifters
Old cam old lifters that weren't together in the first place.

All of them will fail prematurely and take a few bearings out with the swarf they produce.
If your in a rush, go get a standard cam with lifters for £90 from a motorfactors and away you go

i spose a new std cam cant be worse than a badly worn uprated cam
i know you have to use new tapets and cam but dont uprated cams use stronger springs? would this affect a std cam

Some people fit "uprated" springs yer. But half the time these springs are softer than Fords standard springs
Would only take an extra 20mins to throw some ford springs in if you wanted. But tbh i cant see 'uprated' having a detrimental effect on a std cam

piper use to use double valve springs but these have a tendancy to pull the rocker studs out of the head, as said above mate you can get a new standard cam with lifters for around £100, i did on my last cvh and it ran smooth and pulled just as well as it did with the piper in it.

also worthwile doing look at your head when stripped and you will see some brass bungs in the oilways that feed the cam, tap these out and you will have far better cam oiling, the usa spec cvh's didnt have these bungs in = lot longer lasting cams n tappets
