one thing after another ive noticed
took out the k&n cone filter replaced with a original ford air box and new filter, now car does not idle, took off air filter and replaced cone filter and car still does not idle,
its ok if i keep the gas on but soon as foot off the gas, it coughs splutters and just dies on me
whats wrong?

try unplugging the brown plug at the back of the inlet. its awkward to get at but if it starts effortlessly after its been unplugged then its that sensor at fault.

on the metering head theres theres a pipe . if you look in the bay, its on the left of the metering head about parralel to the flap. it should be connected up to the breather. you have probably knocked it when changing over to the airbox. wip the box off and check its pushed in placed fully. botters, good shout. the most likely reason.

I called out the AA, after waiting almost 2 hours he turned up!! He spent over an hour tinkering with it and guess what, no joy, why do I bother paying the AA at all, what he did do was place a cable tie behind the throttle body to keep it slightly open, the revs are at 2k but at least it don't cut out,
The comment above about knocking something out is interesting, I'll have a look tomorrow and take some photos, hopefully you right, I did try to make sure everything was in place, if your right, I owe you a drink

well the aa bloke is a dickhead. having said that they have a general idea of mechanics and wont understand the quirks of the rs turbo. mfi (escort rst management aka bosch ke jetronic) is a unusual setup and any airleak will cause a running issue a best. most likely the car wont start without pressing the pedal/flap in metering head.

i cant see what i might have disturbed, it was a simple unscrew the metal thing on the k&n pull it off, plonk on the rubber thing over the metering unit then the air box and add the 2 10m bolts, but when i have sunlight tomorrow ill have a look.
the aa guy didnt really fill me with confidence, saying these cars are always trouble, very temperamental, ill see what what tomorrow brings, thanks all so far for your input on all this

the breather pot is on the top/left of rocker cover. trace the hose (hard plastic) back to the metering unit. it may have come adrift . wile your at it check all other oil/breather pipes are secure and check the dipstick/oil cap is on properly.
what is that potruding between the airfilter and fuelmeterin head? are you sure the co screw has been put back ect.

had one of the lads from here pop down to have a look at the rs, it does seem to be an air leak somewhere, checking all the pies/hoses, breather pot to metering unit, all around and under metering unit but really cant pin point it, ill get the oil leak fixed and properly take it is SCS on saturday.
oh well, can still drive it just sounds rough as when idling

Don't buy one. You don't have one on your engine. Sounds like an air leak. Get a tin of brake cleaner a skoosh it around pipes & joins and see what the revs do. If they change at a particular spot of pipework then address it! Hope that helps mate!
