id be suprised to hear an r32 or even a focus st be bettered in a straight line against a 200hp erst but then theres the weight to consider. i have had ''chancers'' for example a vectra sri try and boot it away only for the stretch of road to end and i was on his bumper. he seemed to run out of steam at about 110-120mph. my car is about 170-180hp. plenty tbh in a car with fwd and weighs fuck all.

But like you i prefer the character of the old cars far more,give me torque steer and lack of fancy add ons anyday,Makes you feel like your doing the driveing and not the car doing it all for you

I own a rs powered mk 4 that has abit of history on RS track days/forums,and my mate who shares the driving of the MK4 on trackdays recently got a 09 Focus RS.From my drive of his car,plus his comments comparing the 2 cars,I'd say the Focus is easier to drive quicker on the backroads/motorways.The chassis and brakes are on a par with a heavily modded RST with coilovers/4 pots etc.It would have to be a rather special RST to beat a Mk 2 Focus RS in my opinion!!

I'd agree that on a track a rst will have to be pretty special to stay with a mk2 focus RS due to handling.
I think in a straight line a half decent setup with 230bhp or so would see you stay with one- at least until into very high speeds anyhow when the extra power would really be noticed.

Unless the Escort is fairly well tuned, the FRS would leave it for dead in say a 0-100 MPH sprint.

Obviously the RST has a massive weight advantage though.

IMO, go to the pod, see what your best time is and then google 1/4 mile times of other cars.

Mine did 14.4s a few years back with 200 bhp

The next time i go to the pod I would hope for high 13s with new spec, the above times are obviously standard cars, where as the escort is obviously not.

So in my book, a good 220 bhp rst would keep pace with a mk2 FRS/R32 nicely, as long as their standard!

Ive never once said the Mk2 RS is a shit car, there a fantastic car with an amazing chassis setup it handled like an absolute dream but for me i like the old school mk4's.

It all depends on whats been done to the car and the driver behind the wheel at the end of the day.

On a long straight you may get past my pug 107 Glenn its got 70bhp so fast & very modern. You guys do make me chuckle, who wins depends on the Power the other guy has, unless you are Mo then cosmic rules apply .

I INVENTED MO! sometimes i only use half a gear and cruise at 95mph but i have about 4.5bhp
