Default slight problem?

right got a e reg s2 at work with a bit of a problem, first signs were the noisy top end, use a stefascope on it and could here 2 noisy tappets/hydr lifters, on reving it up to 3k it misfires slighty and the cam noise gets louder, also every now and again it advances and retards itseft, looked at the boost gauge and its really erratic on tick over
my first thought is the luggs on the cam are worn which are not opening the valves properly and making it idle/run badely but would this affect the vacume pressure,
gonna do a compression test and a gas test tommorrow, has any1 else got any more ideas on what it could be or tests to do

If gauge is irratic at idle you've deffo got a vacume leak. Probably in the breather system.

ill check all the vacume pipes as there prone to perishing, if the lugs on the cam are worn and the valves aint opening and closing properly would that effect the vacume pressure coming from the inlet
