Whats the best way of resetting the tappets?

what do you mean by reset them ? is it a blacktop or silvertop ?

The engine has not long been put back together and there rattling around. It's silver top gary.

they are hydraulic mate theres nothing you can do to them.what grade oil is in there? were they new when you built it ? are the cams worn ect ?

take them back out and place them in a tub of new engine oil upside down and let them fill then fit them back. usally reving the engine to 2500rpm for a few mins charges them back up but if they are totally dry then i would not reccomend this , like crazycage says are they new etc

no mate just had it all apart put uprated springs in and put at back together the reason y i asked as with the c20xe tappets you can tap them to get the insert out then they fill back up with oil to suit the engine. 5.30 fully synth and they were fine before

I wondered about this too, My 1.6 zetec se is pretty noisy when cold :/
