Its done that because the bearing clearance has got to big as its worn out
This has had the crank banging on it and beaten the metal backing off the bearing making it deform,
If it had been used any longer it would have spun and ruined the crank and rod
You got lucky in one respect,
Best check the ( bearing crush in ) the rod before you rebuild the rod back into the engine,This doesnt mean the bearing to crank clearance,,

just looking at the torque settings 1 was definatly looser than it should have been. altho i cant remember if it was on cylinder 2 or 3 and this shell was on no3 so its possible it was this that caused it.

Through the oil and block it does tend to shroud the noise .it doesn't take much to deform a bearing do a search on google for big end bearing crush,

ive just taken the bearings off the rod piston side and yep both no3 are crushed ie now dont fit snug in their seats. what i would like to know is thereis a very very small amount of wear on the crank journal no3 you can only just feel it if you run your nail accross the width (and no i aint gay haha) should i just fit my h/duty shells when they arrive ??????

Sounds like the crank needs taking to a machine shop to be checked out there should not be and noticable wear on the crank
If you just fit the bearings im Sure it wont last very long
I estimate 500 miles !!!
