Why is 1 big end shell shrunk ?? Pic inside
because i bought my car as a project with knocking engine today i took the sump off and took off the conrod caps the shells look fairly worn but why is 1 shrunk ?? its still marked up std with same numbers as the others so dont understand how its done it ?? just to note the knocking really wasnt that bad ive heard worse.
can any 1 tell me why it could have shrunk !

Its done that because the bearing clearance has got to big as its worn out
This has had the crank banging on it and beaten the metal backing off the bearing making it deform,
If it had been used any longer it would have spun and ruined the crank and rod
You got lucky in one respect,
Best check the ( bearing crush in ) the rod before you rebuild the rod back into the engine,This doesnt mean the bearing to crank clearance,,

just looking at the torque settings 1 was definatly looser than it should have been. altho i cant remember if it was on cylinder 2 or 3 and this shell was on no3 so its possible it was this that caused it.

ive just taken the bearings off the rod piston side and yep both no3 are crushed ie now dont fit snug in their seats. what i would like to know is thereis a very very small amount of wear on the crank journal no3 you can only just feel it if you run your nail accross the width (and no i aint gay haha) should i just fit my h/duty shells when they arrive ??????

If you just fit the bearings im Sure it wont last very long
I estimate 500 miles !!!
