how do i know if it has gone there is a knocking sound coming from the engine . cam belt and head gasket just been done. could it be the cam belt lose? help pls

cambelt would make more of a deep groaning noise if loose, to check i would get hold of the belt and try to twist it, if you can twist it more than 90 degrees (if this makes sense) then its too slack. however get a small piece of wood (short bit of broom handle works fine!!) put one end to your ear and one to various parts of your engine you would be surprised how easy it is to locate faults this way as the sound is really clear down the broom!!! it is also quite common to mistake a knackered alternator bearing as a bottom end noise as the two sound similar was nearly convinced my own bottom end was fooked when it was just alt and ive been mechanic for nearly 15 years!!
