Default Turbo is nackerd after 3 days of having escort rs

Well just my luck after giving it a service oil motorsport 1 15w 50 ,oil filter, sump kit, spark plugs.

Was just two feet from my house after giving it a run for a hour or so, booted her up then pop revs drop smoke pissin out the exhaust and out the bonnet,

Opened the bonnet to see that the seal on the turbo was smokein two??
Drove it down the street tryed bootin it no turbo kickin in so looks like a need a new turbo, How much will a new one cost??

As above it could be rings. Might as well do a compression test to eliminate that!

However, if its the turbo I just got mine re coned at TurboDevelopments in middlesex!
they did a quality job and only charged me Ł175 for new bearings and seals! as apposed to a more popular turbo supplier who wanted Ł450

Also Ive always been told to use 10/40 semi synthetic oil, not 15/50

Its not the end of the world, you can get a used turbo for abt Ł50-100.
And if its the engine then there you can build a zvh for a few Ł100.

Tbh any one who buys a RS Turbo and expects to do nothing with it are mad these are 20year old and probably every owner had nailed it around.

This is the same car that had the dump valve blocked off innit? The one that everyone suspected that the rings had gone on it.....

I think their first theory was correct mate. Try and get it to a local garage, or if it won't move, get the yellow pages out for a mobile mech to take a look. They'll run the compression test for pennies and should diagnose the issue pretty promptly. Take it from there innit.

As stated, these engines are quick, fun, a pain in the aRSe, but one thing they aint - and thats Invincible!

if it is idling lumpy as you say check all the boost hoses for splits, still doesn't account for the smoke from the zorst tho

How constructive of you.

As said above i'd be checking boost hoses, make sure all pipes are attached at inlet too.

give the guy a brake, let him learn..

If you want advice then you ask, thats what hes doing and we are helping him, thats what PF is about, start to lean Kid..

Now back to topic.

I would say on a good note that the pistion rings are fucked mate, Lets hope this hasnt scored the bore to much otherwise its ganna be a hard job for someone to smoth them back out again, its an easy and simple job to change the pistions, ebay or someone on here may have a spair set of clean pistions with no problems..

jack up to a point where u can have room under the car and beable to move around enuff, wack it on axle stands and empty the oil, Remove the sump and see if you can see up the bores of the pistions, if you cant see any damage then its ganna be the top half which means removing the head balts, its easy enuff to remove the head, also you are best to remove the turbo from the mainfold, as they are quite havey when conected to the head.

once remove the turbo you can check for any place in the turbo and also have a better look to see if you can save yourself some pennies and make sure no cracks or any of the fans are cracked inside the turbo hole.

then once removed the head you will need to remove the conrods from the crank which are balts, remove the pistions from the top half of the engine bay as the crank will be in the way, lets hope that the crank aint damaged otherwise its engine out.. maybe you could swing getting the crank out with the engine still in,

i tell you what tho, its an easy job to remove the RST engine, just removing the MFI fuel unit and Drive shafts that are a bit of a pain, otherwise its a 1hur half job. long as ur carefull when lifting the gearbox with it, as i did it myself.

rad cooler off

Mainfold off

Gone

Then refit

and thats with my LSD connected before i put it in.

buying second hand turbos is like buying second hand socks, especially for an rst, almost gauranteed to be changing it again soon, not everybody is born a ford technician so its just aswell rst's are easy to work on and there are forums like this to ask questions on.is the car hard to start as thats a sign of knackered rings,i would expect blue smoke from the rings and white if the headgasket is gone.are the coolant hoses getting hard when the engine is running?is it using water.take off the bottom intercooler hose and if a bit of oil comes out its the turbo, expect residue, but a tablespoon upwards would indicate a gubbed turbo.if thats the case get it rebuilt or shell out around Ł500 up for a new 1.if a rebuild is needed take the engine out as it might need a rebore,do this before dismantling it as this will keep the engine internally clean and all the bolts in 1 area.
