Since no one seemed to know that there was a "correct way" to adjust gear linkage, and were just using trial and error and good luck over good management, I have added it below for anyone whos interested. perhaps someone would like to add it as a how to sticky??

1) Select 4th gear.

2) Loosen the gearchange rod to selector shaft clamp bolt.

3) From under the car lock the gear lever in place by inserting a 3.5mm drillbit or allen key through the alignment hole on the bottom of the gearchange housing. (under car)

4) Ensure that the selector shaft is also in the corresponding 4th gear position by inserting a rod into the selector shaft hole, turning clockwise and pushing right in. (make sure you dont hit reverse)

5) Tighten the gearchange rod clamp bolt, remove the drift, rod and check the action of the gear change mechanism.

i have done loads of them you need to put it in reverse to do it on a 5 speed box

well I was told by a ford mechanic to do it that way and I did mine fine not half hour ago using the above method.

How do you do it reverse then?? because you can only lock the gear selector in 4th with a rod / allen key / drill bit, that is the way way ford made it. surely they didnt go to the trouble of making a hole there for nothing.

I always put it in reverse too!! and it always works!!

what ever works best for you m8, all I was trying to do was pass on some information I had found that may help people who didnt know how to do it. When I originally posted asking for help people were saying that they just kept trying and adjusting until they hit lucky.

I only use reverse and all the above is printed in the Haynes manual anyway im sure

But someone will need it so nice one

that was exactly my point m8, its written like that in the Haynes, and that is apparently how ford Used to do it when these cas were newer, and people were telling me its wrong!

Everyone has there own way of doing things and thats fine, but its nice to share something you have discovered.
