HI, Need help badly. Have a 1986 ERST which has a tapping noise coming from the top end. have replaced the cam/lifters/arms but its still there, lifters always noisy to start with but then quiet down after 4-5 mins so you can hardly hear them. then as soon as you pull away the noise comes back even louder!!!! can cruise along at 50mph and no noise until you accelerate again.. anyone have any ideas... blew turbo and head gasket replaced with stage 3 head/replaced sump gaket/ added oil pressure gauge/sender on oil filter. Oil pressure at 80psi on startup the down to 30 on idle the 40ish when driving!!!! run great for first week now this new noise!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry mate, sounds like bottom end to me

 

Could be a piston ring happend to mine when i ran to much boost would make a tappin noise under load

 

Confident its not the bottom end as had that all checked when i rebuilt it.......it def sounds like its coming from the top end is there any way of finding out if its the piston ring without taken engine apart yet again

 

sounds daft but are you sure the exhaust manifold isn't blowing slightly?

I had this on my RS a few weeks ago and that sounded like i kind of tapping/ticking under load.

thought it might be that so tried pulling away in 1st gear with handbrake up to bring the noise up, with a brave mate leaning over the engine bay, it still sounds like the top of the engine could it be oil starvation to that side of the engine?? i took the oil filler cap off and held the revs up to stop it dying and could not see alot of oil, held hand over the filler then pulled it away there was no oil on it is this right, i could always see the oil going everywhere on my 2.5l vectra????
