Auto Bonnet raisers
Have been thinking for months now on how to make a auto bonnet raiser for the rear of the bonnet.
Think i may have come up with an idea now that may work, so at a flick of a switch or temprature controled, you can raise the rear of the bonnet to let that hot summer air out. But for every day driving you can have it shut as normal.
Thing is, i would like some input please, On would it be a good idea and if i did manage to make it work reliably would people be interested in it??
And also im stuck with what to use to push the bonnet up. Want something like a Central locking motor, as its only got a short throw and will raise it to about the right hieght, But not only they look a bit nasty but they wont have enough in them to push the weight of a bonnet up.
So is there anything else people can think of that might be worth looking at??
cheers

You want something strong a central locking motor wouldn't last long i dont think what about a rear wiper motor that would probably do the job you just have to work out how to control it

a wiper motor spins round, im looking for linear movement, like a central locking motor does. But they wont even have the guts in it to lift a bonnet. I need something that works in the same way, works of 12 volts but can lift at least 25kg.
i found one place so far, but the unit itself is quite big

The problem your going to have is thet you will have to lift the bonnet up off the hinges to raise it.So you can,t bolt the bonnet too the hinges.
Good idea though.

You might as well paint the cabs yellow and write SKIP on it,the ammount of time it,s spent on your drive.

It's no longer a ongoing project he just classes it as a part of the garden furniture now as it's been there so fucking long

Had an idea.If you take out the rear bolt where the hinge bolts to the body not the bonnet. This will allow you to raise the back of the bonnet yet still open it as normal.Just need to fit some sort of motor to the back of the hinge....WHAT DO YOU THINK????

You'd have to ensure the only rear fixing bolt left didn't work loose over time tho. It would need securing tight enough to hold the arm in place, but loose enough to allow the arm to rotate properly.

No,the rear one that is fixed to the motor would hold hinges in place. The front bolt would need a collar on it so it hold it safe in place but still let it hinge up when motor raises it.Like a seat belt fixing bolt.Allows belt to move side to side but fixed safley in place.

Just use a nut to tighten it up, put bolt through the hinge then put a nut on it & tighten it up using the nut allowing the hinge to move free'eeeey

cheers all for the input,
i got a couple of ways to look at ref the hinge problem, so it can still be lifted as normal etc.
will keep you all posted on progress. trying to do it, so it can be used on both escorts and cossies etc.

Ideally if your going to do it and make it a proper job, the mounting point of the bracket to the inner wing will need a bearing and sleeve in there, otherwise things will wear out and get sloppy.

i was going to drop the whole hinge down so it still bolts on the same, and fit a special lifting block between the hinge and bonnet.
I have come up with a block design using a spring now, Valve spring is what im thinking as there cheap, easy to replace if it fails and strong. But it will be height adjustable, so you can limit the height you want the bonnet to lift.
Once i got all my measurements right etc, Im going to get it done in either stainless steel or alloy. Not sure which yet.
getting there tho
