Default Help - Big end shell bearings

Hi.
I'm posting this question on behalf of a friend.
There is a possibility for him to buy a 1993 cossie but there is an "IF", apparently the all car and engine are ok apart from the big end shell bearings.

The question is:
Is this an usual failure?
Could this had caused any other major problems?

All this questions are coz cossies are getting rarer in Portugal and the few remaining ones are being sold for huge amounts of money for their conditions.
This one appears to be ok, apart from the small problem, and this is the opportunity for my mate to make his dream come true )

Thanks for your help and understanding.
From Lisbon, Portugal

take it as the car needs a full engine rebuild, if the shells have gone it will probably need a crank grind, then while its apart you may as well rebore & fit new pistons, oil pump etc.... then skim the head, check valve guides etc.

I wouldn't say its a usual failure unless the car has done lots of miles or been neglected. I'm sure I read somewhere that the YB engine should be good for 100K+ in standard form.

Mine has done 115k and took it to stg 3 at 105k, she still pulls like a train and not use much oil. Must of been well looked after.
