Default throttle position sensor.

hi all.
i've got a couple of questions regarding the throttle position sensor.
1) how do you test it to make sure its working correctly?
2) is it easy to replace? ie: just bolted on the throttle body?
i'm asking this because i've been reading in the latest fast ford about this sensor and the symptoms it describes of a faulty item seems to fit some things mine is doing.
since i've had the car (small turbo stage1) i've always thought it uses more fuel than it should, and on overrun it pops and bangs like a good un!
i'd like to be able to test it before buying a new one as they are £75!
any help appreciated.

not sure on amall turbo, a big turbo one is about a 10 min job to change and can only be done by unbolting the short inlet manifold with the throttle butterly in , - (unless you have a trained ferret with a double jointed back )
