conversion to rack please help?
Hey guys,
I am the one in Malta with the red Cortina. I am changing the front suspension and steering to an escort setup.
I had prevoisly changed to a rack mounted behind the cross member before, but the tie rods were welded to end up with the Cortina taper , and the steering column has some serious joints, and crosses, which I would like to get rid of.
Also I drag this Cortina, and lately the power has gone up and I am crossing the finish line at just under 130mph. Just as I pass the 100mph , the steering gets lighter, and the car starts to wonder, it isn’t funny I am getting scared, also the cozzy is still pushing with all its 20psi.
Now I am trying to go the route I should have gone the first time. I bought a 2wd sump, because I had modified mine so that I had the bowl on the front of the cross member. Since I had learnt from various articles and maybe also sites that escort setup is used for converting the old Tina to a nippy accurate car. So I bought 2 escort legs with the big taper on the rack ends, a new rack and pinion, an escort steering column, and antiroll bar, and all that stuff.
Problem list:
-Cross member mounting holes are different from Cortina, These can be easily modified as soon as I get some measuring up from a friend’s escort.
-The camber, with all fitted in place with std tcas, and the top mounted all the way inwards, (I have adjustable camber) the camber remains negative, I mean around 2-3 degrees camber but on the wrong side. This is the major problem, a friend told me that there might be legs with different included angle, the angle between the leg’s upright and the hub face. If this is true mine might be the one with the bigger angle, but I still don’t know what mine are, and what I need to look for if I need something else.
I was thinking of heating the lower part and removing the strut body from the cast part and machining it to a different angle and re welding it in place. But I am very cautious about welding on these kind of parts, also I don’t think that other people would go through this to fit an escort setup.
Anybody’s help is appreciated?
