slight tapping from my escort cos, seems to come and go, any idea's and any cures would be much appreciated

My mates doing mine on monday the parts have just came from Woodford Garage motorsport
I put 10-60 oil in mine to shut it up but it got worse from cold gone back to 5-40 and it only tapps from cold now
The tapping sure got on my wick

 

Statto you probably havnt the correct oil in the car, try doing a service on the car and putting in genuine ford oil... Cant go wrong. Change the spark plugs, oil filter, fuel filter and the oil obviously and if you still have the problem then do what rizla said.... but i would try a decent full service first.

This is exactly what I did with mine but all it did was make the tapping even worse!! I was then told afterwards by someone in the know that Cossie tappets don't take too well to engine flushes, so ended up having a new set fitted and now it's as quiet as a mouse

 

ooh crap maybe i'll just change the oil and see if that sorts it, if not new set required, does the head need to come off to fit them or what is the crack there?

 

No just the rocker cover matey! Mine was slightly more involved cos I had a new cambelt & tensioner fitted at the same time!

 

they can be cleaned and freed off - quite a simple job -about 2 hours work.

i didi a tech essay on it IIRC...

remove the cam cover, the cam belt and undo the cam shaft shells,

remove the tappets with a valve lapping in suction tool (NOT A MAGNET)

leave them soaking in degreaser for a day and work the piston underneath with a pair of pliers, in and out many times holding the hole in the side of the tappet under the level of the degreaser - lots of thick mingin old oil will ooze out. leave them soaking another day and repeat. one all free, you will fell the piston move really lightly with hardly any resistance. pump out the degreaser, and then leave soaking in new synthestic engine oil for a day and pump them under the level of the oil and repreat the next day. then refit - they will rattle a bit the first 20 secs of engine running. stop the engine and let them recover for a few seconds and start again, this may take 3 or 4 goes and then they will be whisper quiet.
