Default NOISE FROM ENGINE???HELP?????

Ive got a series 2 erst when i rev the engine it sounds fine when standing over the engine but when u sit inside and rev it or drive it u can hear a highish pitched whine which gets louder the more its revved which sounds similar to electrical whine that u hear when ur stereo is on(btw i havent got a stereo in the car) and u get interferance, its the only way i can describe it, the water temp is fine, it starts and idles perfect the alternator belt was a little loose and i was hoping it was that but i tightened it up this afternoon and its still like it ,
could this sound be caused by a split pipe? or any other ideas what it could be...cheers pp

Has the cam belt been changed recently ? If so check its not been done up too tight, that can cause a whine noise. Also have you over tightened the alternator belt ?

Does the whine increase as the engine revs increase ?
