....damn it i'll probrably sound like a right muppet but ive got a Bailey Piston type dump valve on my RS, not sure how old it is (at least 2 years old) but when you rev the engine at idle the piston seems to 'lift up' and open up the valve, if you know what i mean
also at idle it seems to open and close slightly, should it be doing that???? thought it only opened to let the boost pressure out
please humor me

the bailey's do stay open at idle mate, perfectly normal with em - its a shit design i know.
as soon as you rev the engine slightly they will close, its literally just on idle they will be open.
if you are worried about crap getting into the inlet i'd either take it off or make up some sort of filter for it

Absolute best thing you can do is take the DV off and chuck it in your spares drawer. The do nothing to aid turbo life and in some cases can cause potentially damaging overspeeding. Unless you are running a T4 or 30psi of boost you really don't need one
The only thing a DV was intended for was to
A) help prevent the turbine stalling (quicker re-spooling up on gear change), and
B) worst case scenario you can end up with a bent shaft or destroying the compressor wheel, BUT in reality as Oranoco said, unless your running a T4 or 30 psi of boost this isn't an issue.
The bailey ones for RS's have twin piston anyway, its only the first piston thats open at idle, if it was open to atmosphere on idle the car wouldnt run (it would be an air leak), and when they actually dump they let the boost out so slowly anyway compared to a diaphram DV they dont really do much apart from making the sound.
I've got one on mine cos i love the sound, but when i go EFI the DV will be going, would much rather listen to the turbo chatter

I was thinking of chucking it because i dont run alot of boost, and it'll be a bit more stealthy without the dumpvalve, but sadly i like kinda the tsssh sound
like safechav said, there isnt any shit or air getting into the actual inlet as they are TWIN piston dump valves, the second piston that you dont see is the one stopping any leaks and shit passing in/out unless when its dumping.
you may get a bit of shit in the dump valve - maybe - but its never put me off cause i like the noise too. i've had bailey's on all my turbocharged cars, never had any problems.
