Default Pics from Beaulieu yesteday: MartinLabatts awesome RS500!!

PassionFord user Martin (MartinLabatts500) awsome ex Andy Rouse RS500 touring car. This is the actual car that Tim Harvey drove in all of the UK touring car series:

Note the belt driven mechanical fuel pump on top of the cam cover, and huge air filter to turbo inlet pipe - over 100mm internal diameter!!

Very tidy....as you might expect, as these cars cost about £ 150 k each to build in the mid eighties

Proud owner Martin, he also owns one of the Texaco ex Rouse touring cars!

Suited up...........

Yes, i'ts the fuel pump.

Andy Rouse preferred not to use electric fuel pumps, so he fitted the mechanical unit shown, driven off the inlet cam pulley by a toothed belt (looks like a miniture cam belt LOL):

I think your find it does have elctrical pumps as well, a few of them. Can't actually remember the reason for the mechanical pump (fail safe?) but I am sure Martin will fill us in!

Its a backup, a failsafe to get back to the pits etc incase the proper ones die, used on most RS500 racers, and most top flight racers of that age (GrpA R32GTRs for example).

They do run proper fuel pumps too, as that pump hasnt a hope in hell of flowing the amount of fuel needed.

hi,

doug was the one who said get your suit on for a couple of pics,

you would not normally find me wandering around the shows where one, lol

but i am a guy who likes to please so when doug asked the suit came out,

the car runs two low pressure pumps and two high pressure pumps, swichable!

i.e switch on dash for pump one or two, just incase in the race,

the storie goes that andy rouse liked the mechanical pump as it helped maintain fuel pressure as its run of the cam, the higher the reves the more it pumps,

hopefully tim harvey will do some laps at one of the shows, he will wear the original suit (now owned by me) and his original helmet ect,

he is very keen to get back in the car again as he has not raced one since the last race of 1990, and as he said these where mans cars!!
