I'm interested in all the weight saving you have made.

what's lightened to the max?

1. What sort of racing will it be, for pleasure or serious competition?
2. What sort of tyres will be on it?
3. Is the car suspension rose-jointed or bushed?
4. Did you want the suspension rose jointed or bushed?

Due to the light weight of the car, you can actually go a lot softer than you would expect, as normal Escorts are carrying 3-400kg extra weight if you get down to your 1000kg target .

EsCosRacer

sounds like you've done a fair bit of work. It's a pig of a job removing all that tar with the hot air gun, but your right, almost 30Kg.

I have almost the same set up as you as you except the plastic doors. They are almost £200 each!!!

If you like I'll stick some photos on here.

Let me know your corner weights if you have them.

Mike
Serious part, lets say for arguments sake that the corner weights were;
(1100Kg is more realistic than 1000Kg)

F-L 325Kg F-R 325Kg

R-L 225Kg R-R 225Kg
Tas top mounts
All rose jointed, Leda Coilovers
2.5ID 7" front springs
2.25ID 7" rear springs
serious competition - tarmac only.
Avon 230-620x17 Slicks

what factors would you use to calculate a spring rate?

400-500Lb front? and 250-350Lb rear?
Who do you know races an Escort cosworth? All I have to go on is the rally set up in the GpA, GpN manuals.

Maths, Geometry, camber, castor, bump steer etc, etc, are all welcome. Anyone else reading this can throw in their bit.

Should we move this to the tech section?

Kenny.

Kenny,
I would say no more than 350lb on the front and 150lb on the rear. However, I run anti-roll bars, so if you were to remove these and run compression struts, then you would need to compensate on harder springs. However, I would try the spring rates I have quited, because given your 300Kg lower weight than my own car, you might find them surprisingly good.

As you're doing short sprints, try 3° negative camber all round and a small amount of toe-in (0'20") for stability.

EsCosRacer
Apologies for jumping in here, one guy actually runs an Escos in the german hillclimb ch'shp over here. I've seen his car and it weighs 1030Kg.
Basically the car is empty (1seat, no dash etc) with everything plastic.
I'd be really interested to find if you managed to reach 1000Kg. remember corner weights.

Mike
On a car weighing only 1000Kg, would you still go for 8" springs as I have at the mo or go for a 7". If I reduce the spring length should the damper travel not also be adjusted to suit?

Some photos.

This is a friends car.

Kenny,
You'd need to confirm with John at LEDA, but I believe the dampers will be able to accomodate a 1" increase.

As you probably know, we will be at the Ring at Easter, so try and make it and you can see what you think to my suspension set up .

Mike,
I have no direct experience of compression struts, and I personally wouldn't ever get rid of my anti-roll bar.

If you want the full low-down of my car, then look here:
