I use a Bandridge CPL4201 USB to serial adapter, got it from Maplins, order code is A95BF

I use one to connect my TechEdge WBo2 to my usb only laptop, you plug it in and basically the PC see's it as a new com port, works 100%

Heard of loads of people having problems with them, so definately go with one that you know someone else has used and actually works!

I have connected to a DTA E48 using a USB to RS232 convertor if that helps you. I was usuing the OMRON convertor and driver which was about 120 notes although there are some out there that are about £14 that might work.

Most USB to serial cables are NULL modem cables, and will NOT work with a lot of USB devices. The best to get for a laptop is a PCMCIA card with serial ports on.

damo, the serial one wont work as im sure youve worked out as serial port and parallel (printer) ports are different (even tho theyre both 25pin connectors)

i need to get one for my emerald ecu but havent a CLUE which one to buy.

Beware, just because one inteface works with one application doesnt
mean it will work with all others or on another PC.

Windows does seem to be very fussy with serial ports interface via usb
so the application developers would have you beleive ...

However, my recent experiments have found this is more to do with the
applications that use these devices rather than the drivers or hardware itself.

As you may or may not know, I have just recently updated my S8 ecu
editor software to run under windows as a proper win32 application
and have tried numerous USB/SERIAL devices as part of the main testing.

Had so much trouble getting USB type devices working reliably on different
pcs/windows/hardware combinations. In the end, I purchased a proffesional
communications library plug software pack which solved ALL these problems.

Unfortunately, writers of applications that have "issues" with serial comms
via USB will always blame the interface when infact 99% of the time
its their own software at fault !

Final Rant:
FOOK you Microsoft and Bill Gates for your anti DOS and serial port policy.
