My car has been sorn due to the moody weather since the end of october,i was just going to do a service and aeroquip the oil breather system, more for asthetics than anything else.I then decided after seeing a few good jobs on here that i would have a go at tidying the underside of my saph up ready for the spring/summer.i want the car set-up and on the road by mid-april so ive got plenty of time to do it.Right,here goes the list of things i want to do:

strip the underside of all componants
strip all remaining underseal
repair any holes or billy
rust treatment & hammerite/waxoyl underseal
new bilstein/gaz coilovers
new back brakes
rear end fully polybushed
powdercoated rear beam
lots of underside colour coding
aeroquip oil breather system
big front calipers&discs

This is the garage ill be working in(tight!)

ill be taking the rear beam complete with diff ect off this week and be doing a bit of other work so will post pics up probobly every day,once everything is off underneath ill be able to get a good look at the rails and see what sort of job ive got ahead.ill keep you posted.cheers for your support

Great to see this, I did my old Saff last year over the winter. If you want any tips drop me a PM. You cant get the metal fuel lines anymore though mate, I wirebrushed mine down and painted in hamerite, looked fine when complete

just an update,only the pumps and cradle but here goes

nasty and crudy

semi stripped,managed to salvage the rubbers so will strip it,treat it and paint it back up

stripped,treated and primed



did all the stripping and priming on xmas day and boxing day.
later ill be taking off my rocker cover,separator,mirror breather off and taking em to radtec to have some threaded lugs welded in ready for the aeroquip,ill post some pics of the bits when i get them off

Wow looking good!! I would recommend powder coating if you can as it last so much longer than paint. I had my fuel cradle, rear beam and arms all bead blasted and then powder coated black, didn’t cost too much and was a real nice finish that should last forever..
I have a thread on here somewhere when I did mine.. will have to fish it out for ya.

no mate,but sister lives over the back so i just unravel a 50m extension lead for my elec ,its a council garage so i have to shut my self in so no scally can catch a glimps of it and come back at a later date to rob it or from it

 

everything else will be powdercoated matey,as i agree you get a quality finish and will way outlast paint,cheers for your input matey,i will have a look at your resto in a bit

 

 

looking good mate , mine looks nice from the outside but underneath needs some tidying once we get a bit half decent weather ill be starting mine ,

 

went down today and took all my bits off ready for radtec to weld some threaded lugs into my cam cover,3 on the oil seperator and 1 on my mirror image breather(quoted me Ł80)

Big job though

Did under rear arches/tank/boot floor on mine last winter

Done under front wings so far this winter,powdercoated front crossmember and susp,fitted re-con rack,new eng mounts and adj TCA's so far
Hoping to do all the rear beam,but not sure if will get time.

I've scrapped my metal fuel lines as they were FOOOOOOOOKED but i'm gonna replace them with Aeroquip ones, if yours are fooked it's a path you could look down. Like chops says Powder coating will last longer and looks loads better!

Been a bit of debate on here regarding MOT's and aeroquip fuel pipes under the car,pretty sure its a MOT fail.

I will! I'll check my handbook, I'm an MOT inspector so i'm not overly worried!!!

Since had a look in the online Handbook, don't see what the problem is. Fill me in CosKev whats been the issue?

Method of Inspection
Running the engine
This inspection is to be carried out both with and without the engine running.
1. Check the following for leaks or insecurity:
a. fuel tank Reason for rejection a. fuel leaking
b. all visible fuel hoses, pipes and unions Reason for rejection b. a fuel system component insecure.
c. all visible fuel components

Opening the luggage compartment
It may be necessary to open the luggage compartment to carry out a full inspection of the fuel system.
2. Check fuel tank cap for positive fit and condition of sealing washer and flange.
Reason for rejection
a. fuel cap does not fasten sercurely- by a positive means, or- such that pressure is not maintained on the sealing arangement
b. fuel cap sealing washer torn, deteriorated or missing, or a mounting flange/sealing method defective such that the leakage of fuel is possible
Locking fuel caps
If access cannot be gained to the fuel cap because it is locked and the key is not readily available or because it cannot be opened for some other reason see heading 2 of the introduction of this manual.

Can't see any1 arguein with that m8,just a post I read in gen discussion couple weeks back

 

right just a quick update,i went down to start to take off the rear but it will take longer than i thaught,basically every nut and bolt are corroded beyond belief it took me an hour just to undo the flexy brake pipes from the body then i relised whilst on my back that the exhaust has got to come off so that took me an hour by this time i was getting a bit frustrated as i only had a bedside table light to see and limited space to work in but the prep work has been done i suppose,ill go down and get it off tomorrow,but i think ill call at b&q for some propa strip lights first.sorry theres no pics but ill get some up tomorrow.I will just add that this is a massive job for me as all my machanicle experiance basically just involves changing alternators,starters and brakes thats about the most exiting ive ever got with a spanner set so please dont expect me to be grease lightning,cheers to everyone for your replies
