Can someone explain---> Shot peening
IIRC it's a process where metal ball bearings are fired at the metal at a high rate to close up all the gaps (pores) in the metal which then strengthens it.
someone may explain a bit more in detail

The basic idea is to stop cracking on the surface of things like conrods which are under a lot of tension, its puts compressed "dents" into the surface that can the be stretched a little without tearing.
That doesnt read quite right, its one of those things i know what i mean but not sure how to explain it properly

Its a form of stress relieving that basically gets rid of all the edges,working on the principle that cracks and fatigue fissures tend to propagate from edges,shot peening "rounds off" the edges and decreases the chances of a crack starting......
Much the same as if you drill a tiny hole in the outer surface of a cracked windscreen at the end of a crack,It will not go any further....
