Connecting phone and GPS Reciever? NOW SORTED
Sorry guys, but either I'm being thick (likely)
or it won't work
Do I have to connect to the device before I plan a route? (if so, how?????)
Because if I plan a route it says waiting for valid GPS signal, and never gets it, just keeps searching
Any ideas?

you need to pair the phone (or whatever it is) and gps together first.. turn on bluetooth and do a search it should pick up the gps receiver..
also are you using the gps outside it wont work inside.. you need line of sight of the satalites

my dads tomtom works inside the house
?
my gps receiver gets a signal inside at work
and yes you put the receiver on your dash or back window etc, anywhere where it can see the sky
also in tom tom 5 there something called advanced planning where you can pre do a route without a signal but it takes it as given that you are at your pre designated home address when it does it
hope this helps

as chip. my tom tom on first go when ive not used it for ages can take upto 10minutes to lock to 4 or more satalites which is required.. and when you start moving around as well makes it take even longer
The reciever smidsys got should work slightly indoors and from a cold start get a lock under 20seconds, as its got the latest chipset in it, i think your havent paired it from what you say.
Fil, just the man I was hoping would reply
On my 6630, I go to the bluetooth menu, then select paired devices. I have a few already like my PC ect. I go to add new device, select the GPS reciever, enter the passcode (says in the box), and then allow it (authenticicate it) to do things with the phone without asking me.
I done all this thismorning, and it still is listed in my paired devices!!

Taken from the specification:
Acquisition time:
Reacquisition: < 0.1 seconds.
Warm start: < 38 seconds.
Cold start: < 42 seconds.
Hot start: < 8seconds.
So what have I done wrong do you think?
