Default wtf's happened to my gearbox!?

fuckin car

giving it some beans in 4th, changed up to 5th then i seem to recall it jolting a couple of times, then I bogged down so dropped it to 4th and carried on.

LOADS of rattling, and clonking; then realised 5th gear had gone..... if you put it in 5th it just revs - no drive.

Then when I got home went to reverse into the drive and can't get it in reverse - gearstick physically won't go in.

any ideas whats happened? selector or gear or what?

That'll be the 'box mate, not the selector. Sounds like 'new 'box' time...........

Youll need to take off the side cover of the box and have a look. The fault will be visible I rekon. Its hard to advise what to do without knowing what the condition of these components is like.

and when you say 5th is starved of oil first - is that because box oil was low or because I was going up a steep hill?

mine done the same earlier this year going to croft. just got it in 3rd gear giving it hell and bang, wheels locked and no gears. Gave no sign of giving up before it went. Stripped box and found twisted and snapped main shaft and only reverse had teeth left

200+ BHP and heavy foot on std box dont go very well

pretty sure the 5th gear oil starvation thing is just a crap ford design, bernie does a 5th gear oil mod to allow loads more oil into the end of the box so it doesnt happen again.......

thats the lay shaft bearing being killed, thats caused by slowing the car down with gears ( its true as thats what i ALWAYS do and ive done prob 7 boxes,,,,,,, NON OF EM IN A TURBO POWERED CVH AND ONE IN A 1300

5th gear is caused by low gearbox oil btw, if the oil level was right then it would still go BUT usually when holding it at high revs for a long period of time,,,,,,,,,, i done 1 box like that but i held the foot to the floor from watford gap services to the leeds turn off and the car just "poped" out of gear and i could get 4th fine, just would not hold in 5th untill i slowed down a little and the box cooled down

that box actually lasted me for 10k miles after that, but never used it on a motorway since

I didn't do much on it, helped change the box, mounts, Anti rollbar and fitted the cossie brakes up front. Most of the engine work etc was done by EA.

Know the car well

Can't see why you are selling it mate.

Ballin - I have a full ERST 'box stripped back home, everything bar the LSD. If you want fifth gear alone let me know. I have a Stage 1 Bernie 'box in my Zetec Turbo Fiesta, and made damn sure it was full! Put the car on axle stands, filled it to the brim, left it half an hour and filled it again, probably took close on 500ml extra after that Had it jacked up to get as much in there as possible.

dont want to overfill it tho either do ya mate?

cheers for the offer btw. I may well take you up on that! but it will be new year until I can get into it!
Is replacing 5th gear a diy job or do you need to check clearances etc. etc.?

couldnt say for sure mate but if your box was low for starters it may not help, the dude i worked for said people dont realise they have to check the levels in the box i didnt untill he said i know that
You are bang on the money mate! Unfortunately just about all service schedules I've seen, especially the Ford ones, do not specify "Check gearbox oil level"!!!

Incidentally, the reason the gearbox won't go into reverse is all the 5th gear shrapnel getting in the way!

Not sure you can overfill them really? Sure Bernie would be the one to clear that query up I'd guess if fifth has showered bits everywhere the 'box could maybe do with a fairly extensive strip to clean out the shrapnel. Anyway, if you want a cheap gear, let me know via PM on here or fiestaturbo.com, FT being the better bet
