Default Denso Sparkplugs........

As a few of you will know, i run Denso Irridium IK31 plugs in my car

anyway, on the way to the blackpool pissup last week, i noticed a small misfire when accelerating in 4th and 5th and a bit of unburnt fuel out the back.

upon inspection today of the sparkplugs, 2 of them (numbers 3 and 4) had showed signs of a heat related failure.

#3 plug = the insulator was slightly loose in the body of the plug

#4 plug = the whole insulation was freely spinning round inside the plug and carbon had blown up the middle of the plug

This also happened when running IK27's in germany aswell on one plug, but on a different cylynder (number 1)

has anyone else had any problems with running these plugs - IK27 or IK31 in their cossies? as at 40 to 50 quid a set, they are bloody expensive to only last 4000 miles

and before anyone says "get your car set up" or "you car isn't set up properly", the car was setup by Stu before we went to germany and has absolutely NO problems at all apart from an appetite for 50 quid plugs

Need to be looking at the fuelling Gracie, something may well be amiss with it somewhere now since we did it. I have customers with FAR bigger power than yours running these plugs with no problems at all, including my own which at a guess have covered over FIFTEEN thousand miles now pal!! You must have done a good few thousand since i saw you?

this is true Stu - may be time for me to buy a set of them there black injectors from yourself as i'm sure the greens can't handle the top end fueling - as the ik27 only failed after that 150-160mph blast down the autobhan on the way home

Ive properly abused Ik22's in the past and been completely unable to kill them even when running 300bhp on nitrous from a standard 2 litre engien using these plugs!

I dont think it will be the plugs.

Does the fact i have done over 12000 miles on them without taking them out, checking them, gapping them or looking at them for any reason answer your question?

Not to mention the fact the unburnt fuel at part load measurable in the exhaust almost HALVES on most YB's with the Iridiums fitted?

I personally would love to junk the rst ones.. brings me out in a rash, just from firing her up!

The plugs are used in lots of jap motors without problems (under various guises including HKS)

so i am fairly sure the plugs wont be the problem. Having said that i have not had any experience with them in the sierra though.

The 071s are a great plug for the YB but they dont last very long (Relatively speaking) and they arent the best with extremely lean mixtures (Leaner than 15:1) Other than that, fill your boots, great plug and VERY strong indeed.

Remember, when running a wasted spark configuration your plugs last less than half as long as they do with a conventional distributor cap

I sell and run Denso's mainly for Jap stuff, but I have had no problems with the Cossy applications.
I use the vk20pr-z11 as should the 4x4 saff's
T34 should run svk20r-z8
2wd saff are ik24
rs500 are ik27
3dr are ik22

With no cat on the car different plugs need to speak to your tuner.
Sometimes it is important to change the heat range when running higher boost etc, i.e. use a colder plug i.e. go from vk20pr-z11 to vk22pr-z11, or from a ik22 to a ik24 etc etc
Escort turbo runs ik24 and tuned ik27.
