After flicking through Top Marques in the Asda, the Merc E55 AMG @ 98-99 seem like good value at around the 10k mark.

Has anyone come across these motors and are they any good?

they are awesome....try to get a 2000 model as they were facelifted (ie indicators on the side mirrors etc etc )

its the new shape e55 thats 476bhp the older shape was just the v8 5.5 not supercharged.

they are pukka motors but a little dated dash and very juicy

the new ones is a different story most specced with everything you can imagine but looking for 38k starting price

I got offered one of these before for 7k, but the running costs scared me off!!! Brilliant car tho.

 

As with all Mercs, the steering is soo light, its un-nerving. Feels like their nothing connected between the steering and the road wheels. Its a big car too, as in long, but being an auto means its easy to drive. Feels a little bit dated inside compared to the newer Mercs. Descrete too, de badge it and no body will know. Resonably bomb proof, though watch out for Cat converters giving up. Thats a several grand touch (4 IIRC)

 

 

What about the current model s class the one that is going to be replaced you can pick up a s430 for bout 12 grand that sounds good

There are three things you need to concern yourself with when considering a W210: Rust, Rust and Rust. Sadly, the E55 is no exception...

 

Yes! They do seem to corrode rather a lot! We had an E320 which had corrosion all over it. Had it from new for 3 years.

Look around the boot lock and the side repeators and any thing that clips into the body work like side trims.

Any cars that have had paint work will be a lot better than the origional Merc paint. The reason being that most body shops will apply paint in the region of abround 5-600 microns thick where as Merc is only around 100 microns thick.

They also moved the side repeators into the door mirrors to try and combat corrosion in the front wings.
