Default my 89 3i zetec, S1 arches and cossie stoppers.

been readin on here for a bit but never posted, got a bit of time off work now so thought I'd say hello ppl, and this is my car....

89 3i originally mfi.

old lump, rebuilt it with kent rally cam, solid tappets, ported 16i head full scorpion fitted and K&N panel filter.

a while later the missus took it out and it came back with no oil in it. eek.

bought this...

did this...

then this...

basically standard atm 1800i zetec running on original ztec ecu, no cat, egr or airbox. plans for next year are 2.1 block, keeping it N/A on bike throttle bodies and new management.

over the winter got a few bit of bodywork to do. done drivers side inner and outer sill and both rear arches.

small hole in floorpan, welded that up now,

this was a bit more worrying but also sorted now,

as was this, outer sill previous owner had a patch put on over the top of a bit of rot, about a kilo of metal fell out with the help of ye olde grinder.

this is the side of the car..

and the front.

pics aren't great quality and i havent got all that many like the finished welding n that cos I took em on my phone.

its all sorted apart from 2 tiny blemishes on each front arch. ive put both rear arches in it and drivers side sill, all floorpan is sorted apart from a 1cm aquare bit that ive not had time to do yet. then I'm going to put s1 arches on it and hike the power.

hey mate, I assume you have the efi cvh?

if you wana keep reasonable low end power I'd stick with the standard 3i manifold to be honest, port match it to your head and do the inlet as well, basically you want the air to flow smoothly and without restriction.

if you're going for all out top end lunacy then get a high lift cam, (optimal power band 2500-8000), solid tappets, arp con rod bolts and I'm not sure about a "chip" most of em are pretty shoddy TBH. They have a "1size fits all" richen it up a tad and advance the timing a smidge approach. I'd take it to a rolling road operator who knows these type of cars, on the standard inlet you might see 130bhp if you're lucky? Run it on 97 octane fuel and it'll feel a bit more lively and keep itself clean.

But with above mods it won't be any fun in traffic, at high load and low rpm mine used to splutter then kick you up the arse and fly off down the road. Thats why i went for the zetec in the end, didn't have to trade off bottom end torque for top end power. a 130bhp 1.8 16v in the same car as a 130bhp 1.6 8v would not be a fair race at all, the zetec pulls like a bull from no revs, then comes onto power midrange and keeps getting stronger whereas my cvh at least was like a 1.3 until the cam kicked in, it's like trying to drive on boost all the time.

does the 2.0 fit as easy as a 1.8 zetec engine?id like to go 2.5 duratec but think its would be alot of work and too costly!

2.0 is basically the same but as it was only fitted in mondeos not escorts or fiestas, you need to fit the escort/fiesta zetec sump and pickup pipe so that the exhaust will clear the sump and not be pointin in a funny angle, then depending on the lump you pick you'll need the escort/fiesta waterpump as the mondy one spins the opposite way.

id get the 1.8 in and running to be honest. then when you get bored of that get a 2 litre lump and fit the 1.8 inlet with 2.0 throttle body and ecu and you can keep all the loom youve fitted... unless you 100% know what you're doing, then the 1.8 is the most sensible option.

focus blacktops can also be fitted but a lot of them have that PATS system which is a whole other pain in t'bum.

i fitted it myself, made the engine mount, wired it up, plumbed it, everything. bought a donor car, got stuck in and made it up as i went along really.

with throttle bodies, headwork and mad cams you could get over 200 bhp with the 1.8, but like i say. If you're doing the work yourself, I'd get the 1.8 in first, get the management you want working, then just swap the block. get it all working sweet first, then go for bigger, then after that go for the cams, throttle bodies etc as it WILL be very expensive to do it all in one go. If you have money to burn, I'll do it for ya lol.

Thats what im gona do, 1 stage at a time. I got a zetec in and running for 300 quid, next summer i'm goin for fully mappable management, bike tb's and once it's going good and shook down put the bigger lump in cos thats where the power is. I've seen 250bhp out of n/a 2 litre blocks on the standard crank. that'll beat some seriously fast motors. I'm on the standard 3i box atm, which is pretty much the lowest ford did so I get the wheels spinning up in 3rd, ATB and mk5 1.6 ratios nxt year will give me traction and 60mph in 2nd.

yeah I've just had a look at your site mate, is the car running yet? I've had mine on the road with zetec power for over 6 months now. why did you use the EFI 3i loom? loads harder than using the zetec one when we tried it on Rich's car (xr4x4rs).
