Default Traction

Ok, i have 140bhp, and i have problems with traction, i have real problems in 2nd, where it just lights up the wheels, then put it into 3rd, back off, then punch it & off it goes again.

Soooo, most of you guys have silly bhp, so how do you get traction? tyres is an obvious choice, and i will be changing these soon, but what else can i do to get the grip down?

Cheers.

Firstly I would be looking at your tyres. Once this is eliminated I would then be looking to see if the gearbox still has its LSD. 140bhp should not cause this much problem. On a dry road with mine I don't get much spin in 2nd unless I'm trying to smoke the tyres

Polybushes and a good suspension setupwith not too much lowering. 25-30mm is optimal. Also get your front wheel alignment sport on. Laser measured is best. Good tyres also.

Jack the front of the car up so both front wheels are off the floor. With the car out of gear turn one of the wheels by hand forwards. If the opposite wheel turns the same way you have your LSD and all is fine. If it turns the other way it has a standard diff which means at some point an owner was a cheapskate and stuck the wrong gearbox in

You deffo have a problem somewhere as with 140BHP you should be struggling to get wheelspin in 1st!!!

I have 220BHP and on a dry day in a straight line I don't get much wheelspin in 2nd.

1st & 2nd it just lights the tyres as soon as i start to put my foot down, occasionally get it in 3rd, but thats minute.

Time for a proper box perhaps.

Also, it torque steers like buggery to the left.

cheers for the help, will have a look tomorrow

An LSD won't help with traction in a straight line, only when cornering

I had 220bhp on a Standard clutch for ages. Only time it played up was at Santa Pod after giving it a real hard time.

I have 320bhp and don't get any wheelspin in 2nd on a dry road

So if i can light the wheels in 1st & 2nd, theres a good chance that i need a proper box, balls.

Will get a gen ford clutch fitted when i get round to changing the box, mine is on its way out i think, only lift it 1/2cm off floor & it bites.

cheers for the help everyone.

Had my Rs For about 2 months. i am just worrieing lol. on a staight line my cars drive in a line it neither pulls to the left or right.it only wheel spins in first if my wheels are turned left or right or going round corners. never really spins in second only in wet.

LOL I THINK IAM SUCK A WORRIE WHAT YOU LOT THINK HA.

CHEERS

An LSD will help with traction in a straight line. An open diff will always transfer the the same power to both wheel. When one wheel starts to spin, and it does not take much power to make it contiune spinning, the other wheel will get the same amount of power. This is why it's called a "complete loss of drive" when one wheel slips. The other wheel will get the power it takes to keep the wheel spinning. Imagine one wheel on ice, and the other on tarmac.. An LSD will be able to transfer the power to the other wheel and give drive.

So if you se one skid mark in your rear wheel mirror, you know you have not utilised the engine's full power.

mines fine in the dry but take it out in the wet and it just loves to spin the wheels soon as it comes on full boost

If you have a genuine RST box in then in my opinion wheelspin isnt an issue in 2nd gear onwards with 180bhp - 200bhp.Regards Micky

theres alot to be said for a 3i box, they take stacks of abuse because they aint having to take the stress, seen plenty of lsd boxes bust the casing round the diff

and the torque steer is fun too

ive got a xr2 box and its great fun
my box doesnt like goin between 1/2/3/4 and 5/r have to whack it which ever way 1st then it will engage , new box is sat there but i'll live with it
