depends if the 90 spec had a fuel computer, if it does u'd need to swap over the lil cubby hole bit (they never stick ), also u may be left with a hole if the 90 spec bits had a heated screen button
it will all phisically fit tho
just the options that make the odds

Nope, the model from 86 to 87 is a litle bit different, if you want to have your gaz and heat gauge to work like it should, you need to fit them reverse(dont know why they made them like that) they dont work proberly if you just fit them in, one of them will go straight to the top and the other one will try to turn the uppersit way, wierd i know

If you look closely on the back you can see a "serial number" wich is either AB-86 or AB-88 and they dont fit! I know that you can take the hole instrument and change that, but then you WILL have the problem. Look if the gauges sits the same place(heat and gaz)i cant remember which one has the petrol sitting to the right or left. Check also the gauge it self, take it out and you will se a MAJOR difference in the two. Think that Ford used the last of the mk.3 mechanic for the first mk.4 on the market. There is also a difference in the digi clock elements(if you have ever opened one of those)then you will(again)see that its rater old parts inside(just like the gauges in the instrument). Another thing they also have used from the mk.3 is the bootlid, there you can see that the wirering for the washer and bootlight comes from the midle(just like on the mk.3)and not in the upper left corner like on a "normal" mk.4. They also used the "brown" tintet widows from the mk.3 on the first mk.4 they made. The reason i know this is because i have an mk.4 with alot of mk.3 parts on/in it(no it has not been fitted by the old owner, why should he). If you dont believe what i say i will see if i can get some pics up on this site.

Doesn't matter what set of clocks you have, it will know what's what - don't argue when I know I am right lol

Also, why are you mentioning th mk3??

We're talking mk4 here...of course the mk3 is different, we ALL know this

Please rea what i wright, i sayd that my mk.4 has alot of mk.3 parts in it, cant you read!? And NO it wont know anything if your car is a 86 or 87 and you put in a 88 - 90 instrument in it, you have to take out both the petrol gauge and the heat gauge and swap place. That you would have known if the car you have swapped it in where on of the very first mk.4 and wanted to fit the instrument from a 88-90 mk.4. By the way, are you saying that they also looks completly the same? couse then you are in for a big suprise, they dont! Its not much that differs the two but they are different!

ok, so i am the only one that had probs when i swapped the 86-87 instrument to a 88-90? I had to put the heat gauge where the petrol gauge is. Just look at the white dials you can buy, some have the heat gauge to the left and some to the right, now that should be a big mysterie then.............

Not really, the design is different indeed
When I had the fuel gauge on the right, I had a problem because I needed it on the left so I could put a gauge in where the wter temp was (electronic one)

I got some of the newer spec dials and plugged in to see if I could use them, it worked fine so just used them

I did not change any of the wiring at all, neither did I have to swap anything over

Don't mean to be rude, but you really are making yourself look like a right cock, I am right, I KNOW I am right, so just don't argue about it

You have some mk3 parts, that's why it's so fvvcked up mate
