Gonna tow my RS to the bodyshop on Monday!

It has no engine or battery so no electrics! It has brakes though although it has been sat for a couple of months!

Any laws I need to know?

Do I need to be insured on it to be towed?

How can I get the brakes working a bit better so I dont go into the back of my mate towing me!

 

it has to be MOT'd and insured and taxed (i.e road worthy)

before you can tow it IIRC

 

If you on a rope or bar (breakdown/recovery) it must be taxed/mot'ed/insured and roadworthy as vehicle will have a driver inside whilst being towed

If it on a trailer (all 4 wheels off ground) then nothing needed except the towing car must be insured etc etc

If using a chariot or A frame then towed vehicle is classed as a trailer and only requires to be safe and have legal tyres on any tyres in contact with the road

(Methinks that is correct)

 

It is taxed and has an MOT but not insured

Will be easier to get somebody to tow it for me then to be able to do it rather than change insurance over for an hour to take it and an hour to bring it back at 20 quid a pop!

 

it wont be roadworthy. so its game over anyway if your just using a rope/bar

ring the aa or rac and tell them youve broken down and need a lift to the garage

 

Yeah they will turn up and spot the problem right away.

later that day the AA turn up

AA "Right what’s the problem ?"
Poom "not sure car wont start can you tow me please "
AA "pop the bonnet mate"

long uncomfortable silence................................


AA "I think I see the problem mate"
Poom "oh"
AA "yeah the engines fallen out...................did you notice anything strange before it conked out??"

 

 

I am a recovery agent for an Insurance Company based recovery scheme

If I attend a breakdown and the vehicle looks like it is not roadworthy or no tax then I have to ring the control centre.

If they tell me to stop the recovery then I still get paid and car stays where it is.

 

And doesn't this of course all depend on whether your licence allows you to tow?

Hire a trailer for the day mate,shouldn't be that much

 

And dont forget a vehicle with a tow bar to pull it !

 

If you are a driving (in control of steering an brakes) then need everything you would need to drive normally.

Also cannot tow on a motorway.
