If you don't mind doing work on it I would just worry about getting the best shell possible with a nice interior. The mechanical stuff you can sort as you go then.

Find something with a blown engine perhaps and then rebuild your own motor for it. Saw a nice tidy grey S2 88 spec not too long ago with a dead gearbox for Ł600. If somebody had the time and cash that could have been sorted and running againg without too big an outlay

Got a mate who buys and strips RS's for a living in Hertfordshire so I can ask him to keep an eye open for you if you want?

to look out for body work wise, is

rusty battery tray, rusty rear chassis rails, rust bubbles around the sunroof, plus genral rust areas as per normal car.

and if you want to make sure the engins sound, them listen very hard to the gearbox, any slight wine and be perpared for a new box in the future, look for turbo smoke, any smoke and it could be new turbo. check for head gasket blown in the normal ways. only buy one thats got history or paper work with it as well. you need to know something about the car.

also check the vin number, make sure its not a re-shelled RS in a XR shell. not sure what the vin number spose to start with now, but somone on here will know.

the price of the RS turbo vary quite a bit from what i see. you can pick one up for just over a grand running with MOt etc, but it will need alot of TLC. the average price i think, and correct me if im wrong anyone.

88 spec RS turbos wil be about 1.5k to 2.5k depending on condition

90 spec is 2.5k to 4k again depending on condition ans spec of engine.

you can pay up to 7k for a full concours turbo.

i payed Ł900 for mine, but it had a running problem, which turns out to be a cracked piston but mine is a 61mk miler, and 180 ish BHp engine and very very clean body work.

so if you dont mind playing with the engine ec, you can pick up a bargin.
