Borrowed one from work for a week a couple of weeks ago, custard yellow with back leather etc . Had high expectations as other people in our office who have driven it have raved about its performance but it felt a bit of a barge to me . 180 BHP is just not enough in something that big, couldnt enduce any 2nd gear break traction wheelspin even in wet with the TCS switched off.

Obviously if its not going to be your "fun" car and more a daily driver then it would be fine, was v solidly built, smooth, basically a standard VAG car (but better value than VW or Audi) and im sure with a chip etc it could be much more fun but it just felt slow and lacking in torque compared to my "luke warm" spec (now 181 BHP) RST.

Just IMO

tiff, after i sold the escos i had no idea what to get next.
had me track car for fun so bought a old volvo to tow it with life was all good
until!!!
i stumbled across a 52 plate skoda octavia vrs in black, got it silly cheap 3k under book!!! not looked back since.
love it to bits and prefer it over the escos due to the sheer fact i can drive it hard and not have to listen out for a knocking engine and i can leave it anywhere without worrying that sum toe rags made off with it.
best bit is i thrashed it all the way back from sheffield and still averaged 37mpg!!!! sorted
few piccys to wet ya whistle

been chipped to 210bhp, cat 1 alarm and tinted windows.

Chipped literally HUNDREDS of them, from basics to the Rs and VRS all great cars and i would have no qualms whatsoever about owning one. Its got Bombproof VAG power unit and buildquality, what more can you ask for?

The Octayia VRS is the same 180bhp 1.8 petrol engine as fitted to the Golf special GTI and the TT's and a few of thre A4's so is a good well built engine, but cant ever remember a diesel VRS in the octavia. The new Fabia VRS is a diesel though but not heard how good or bad they are as yet!

Lee

Funny you should say that as i looked at a 520D today but i thought the car was a little heavy for the engine

Will keep my eye out for a 530D though

Excellent cars. Our traffic police have a few now as they have outperformed just about everything else including 5 series BMW's that were on test.

Can't go wrong, just the badge problem which is a shame as the have come a long long way since the Favorite

I know they are good but the fuzz don't just look at performance from the go point of view they look at maintanence and everything else which teh Skoda's apparently romped home with.

Forget a petrol engine for a "normal" car. Forget a Skoda and buy a VW Golf.

PERSONALLY I think the build quality and cabin quality of a Mk4 Golf GTi Diesel is far superior than any Skoda or Seat supposed equivalent (I think they look nasty inside, just like the Mk5 Golf)..... but thats my opinion.

Get Stu to chip it and you will have a car with circa 200bhp, still does 50mpg, wheel spins in 1st & 2nd (even with the traction control on when provoked in the dry) and manages to get to 60mph in a smidge over 6secs.

The only downside is that with weather like at present (well any weather that is not dry )I am unable to put my foot down as it spins the wheels up so easily with nearly 300lbft.

I can quite honestly say, it's the best ever normal car I have ever owned. As a shopping car, it goes like shit off a shovel and has all the refinements of nice interior, aircon, nice seats, stiffer GTi suspension, 6 sp box etc etc.

All in my opinion of course.

have to agree the interior of the skoda is pretty bland. reminds me of the audi trims from the mid/late 90's. i liked the seats though. and loads of room in the estate version.
