Default Any views on a Celica GT4 ?

I'm bored of my ST170, nice car but too dull.

My ideal next car would be a Late low milage Escort Cossie. but I don't think I'm going to find one for less than 8k, which is all I'll have.

I've always liked the 4 headlight shaped Celica GT4 (st205) , I can get a low mileage 1996/97 model for 8k

It will be my main car, so I need something reliable and really want ABS and aircon.

Anyone had any experience of them or can suggest something else quick and modern ?

Thanks guys

8k really, maybe 10k tops

Civic is too much hard work and ugly.

Won't be doing too many mods, just exhaust and a little tweak on the boost to 300bhp

Bullet proof a mate had one for 4 years, in that time it was thrashed non stop without failure.
Std turbo only good for 1.2bar max or it snaps.

Oh with just decat, exhaust, filter and uprated fuel pump it set a 13.9 sec 1/4 the boost controller was set to 1.2bar. Not bad for a car weighing 1400+kg.

From what I've read the main thing letting the GT4 down is the weight, but I guess that Toyota over engineering everything, after all a Saxo is nice and light, but its made out of fags packets and falls apart

Thanks for the positive feedback.

If I can get one for 8k I will have enough to get the Capri back on the road too

You should be able to pay less than that, my mate said some in the trader (he knows them from gt4oc) got no phone calls at all, do some hard core bargaining as most go for evo's scoobs these days.

Exactly. Standard car is more of a GT cruiser then sports car unfortunately. Still some say it's best handling of homologation specials (as standard). ST205 has 3 LSDs and pretty advanced engine, braking systems. Weak link as in any transverse engined 4WD is the gearbox.

this is on 18's too... cant remember all the details, but 60ft comes in around 1.7 and it crosses the line at around 100mph every time.

Well I'm getting old now, so I like a bit of comfort, but still want some speed and thrills.

The gearbox should be OK with 300bhp though, and I won't be going over that.

It schouldbe just fine a car for you. You schould check parts avalibility and competentent serviceman in your area though. They are Toyotas but still homologation specials, not true road cars so they might be braking down now and then.

they are a bit on the heavy side but great cars , the running gear can take abause upto 350/380 bhp after that they will fail

as my mate has one and his is a genuine 380 and has blown the gearbox up twice now

cheers marco

hi marco
must be something else wrong as gt4 boxes are well know for being strong and reliable, no one has any probs other than worn synchros at high mileage. Fensport cars were still running completely std boxes and diffs at 600bhp, he's only just now found the limit of the box.

st205 is the one to go for, std cars gave 250bhp and 5.7s to 60mph. 1/4m in about 13.9-14.2s. you can get 300bhp with a decat downpipe, filter and exhaust at 1.1 bar boost. mine runs mid4s 0-60mph and 100mph in 11.7s. excellent cars.
