Just on my way back from tomos ford parts funnyly enough booting it away through second my box just made this hoooge grinding noise so i slowed down straight away and on slowing down it wacked and jearked few times while out of gear "if anyone knows why ???"

Ive got a few questions that hopefully some of you rs genius's would be happy enough to answer


How much will i expect to pay for a re-conned box ?

How much for a second hand box ?

and how does an xr3i box fair with a 200bhp rs ?


You see i wanna get the piece of shit back on the road asap and ive got a 1991 efi xr3i box to hand, whats the best way to go ?

spend 500 on a stage one as it bout the same price as a standard ford recon! It will last!!

Just fit 3i one might not last but it get you back on road for now you could then save up for a better 1.

I emailed bernie about the stage 1 box
he said he wouldnt run any more than 200bhp through it

 

just get an IB5 box from a zetec and fit the lsd on it, i done the conversion on mine, a reconditioned IB5,with my rst final drive and lsd, fitted at a garage, for Ł285, they supplied the box, i supplied the clutch, never gave me any problems or my mates rst,

we were both running over 200bhp for about year with no problems including many runs at santa pod, make sure u get the box which has the starter at the front of the box

 

I would not run an RST without the LSD. Loads of uncontrolled wheelspin.

Bernie i sthe man to speak to regarding gearboxes and I consider Ł500 for a box pretty cheap in the grand scale of things.

BUng a 3i one in for now and save as the 3i box won't last very long

 

Different advice he gave many others then...including me

 

He will allow a safety margin. If he tells a customer it's good for Xbhp and it then explodes it's his problem if he knows it's fine at Ybhp but quotes a lesser figure of Zbhp he shouldn't have units returned as faulty.
