IIRC The recaro came in the GT TDI which is the 130 bhp version?

Either way, they're great engines ina well built car

*Edit scrub that, just read the check book - GT versions 110/115 + 130 - and have "sports seats" as standard *

The GT TDI is the 150 bhp one...

There is also a 130 bhp known as the TDI ( the DI being in red badges)

and the 110 bhp TDI (I in red badges)

They also do the 90 bhp one.

My Dad had the 130 bhp one and it went very well for a diesel engine

Beach the 110 / 115 / 130 and 150 are ALL GT TDIs its the red letters that dictate which is which engine

Ie the GT TDI 150 will be all red letters IIRC

However the interior of the 110 /115 130 are the same

That's what I thought.

Do they all come with Recaro's then? As I was looking at one on Ebay and it hasn't got Recaro's (Well I don't think it has anyway!)

Cracking motor . IF it goes wrong they can be costly as a lass at work found out.

Very well built, comfy, economical and nice to drive. Only criticism I might have is I found the steering a little lacking in feel but that could just have been me

There is alot of difference and the lettering on the back differs a hell of a lot.

Generally;

all silver TDi = 90

Red i = 110 upto 2000 ish

Red Di = 115 or 130

GT TDi upto 2000 ish = 110 with nice trim etc

I'm pretty sure the 150 was simply badged as GTi and is pretty hard to tell the difference between the petrol equivelent.

Personally i like the 90/110 engines as theres less electronics to go wrong, imho they sound smoother and again imho seem to have less problems than the others. I know of several 115/130's that have needed re-con turbos and the odd one with a bent con rod. & every 150 i know of has quite a few oil leaks from various places, not sure why but oil leaks seems to be a bit of a problem on the 150.

But with good maintaince a 150 would be the ultimate choice if consistantly travelling long distance.

Also a golf with a all red TDi badge is a fake, this wasn't used on the golf.

They are very well screwed together but do have they're faults, it's just it's such a good car the owners never seem to mind, rear wiper motors, window regulators, brake pedel switches & drivers door locks always seem to fail. Quite frustrating really when you look at competitors which just don't have these problems.

Oh and i'm pretty sure all the engines can be tuned to 200bhp.

Red badge was used from the facotory, seen 3 or 4 cars deliervd stright to the PDI centre with red badging

as people have said there good cars, amin engine diffrences are the turbo, injectors and obviosuly ECU map

things they do have propblems with are Window Regulator falling, Ł220 fitted from a dealer as the plastic clisp the hold the window are brittle and can brake, modded versiosn have metal clips whcohs ive never seen fail

also the rear washer jet pipe can split due to freezing, and mena it leanks onto the rear boot latch, brakeing this

brake pedal switches seem to fial, not alot to replace, but annoying all the same

Basically anything is possible but if you mean can u just get a remap on the 110 to 200hp then the answer is no. From memory the main differences between the 110 and 150 is the turbo size, front mounted intercooler, injector size (i think) and CR. After remap on the 110 u'll be looking around the 140ish hp. To be honest even the 150hp after a remap will most likely give u around 190ish hp.

I still think you are wrong about that, the 150 bhp one is the GTtdi with the proper gti spec.

The 130 bhp one that my dad had was not a GT tdi and came with a much lower spec as did the other models

No worries mate as its doin my head in now as ive never seen a 110 bhp GT tdi they have allways jsut been tdi's. As it seems pointless making all the tdi's GT as it takes the speciality of the GT away.

I know this as i used to give him some stick saying '' you should of got the GT tdi'' and urs is nothing like a GT tdi

His car had different wheels to the GT different bumpers and skirts different interior, i know this at at the same time my mate had a silver GT tdi and there was nothing that was exactlt the same and his was badged GTTDi my dads was badged TDi ???

Ill get the reg plate later today if you want to check it out

I still argue that the 150 bhp is the only GTTDi

The others are jsut TDi's with varying power

I had an S-reg gt tdi, and it was badged as that, but htne my friend has a T-reg one and his is just tdi on the back but the log book has gt tdi

Anyway mine had done 126k and was still going strong, but think the engine has a fault as my friends does the same thing, it kinda chugs when you roll up to a junction and clears it's self as soon as you touch the brakes , annoyed the hell outa me

Here's mine before i sold it

What these guys are saying is correct.....all 110/130/150bhp MK4 Golfs are actually GTs - some of em VW just decided not to badge up thats all.

Theres a discussion on it here.....

we bought the exact same car as that ebay one for my mrs a couple months ago. Same colour and very similar mileage. Its fantastic and you get 100 odd miles from a tenner of fuel Lots of people dont like the colour but personally i think its great

Mrs had a 53 plate 206 before that and this 6 year old golf pisses on it. It feels more sturdy and you get a reassuring thud when the door shuts and not tinny like the 2 year old pug!

And to join the argument its a GT TDI 110. It says so on the logbook so its a big fat for MR Beach

Check here if the link works....

rac check on our reg if it doesnt work look for J88OMB

Default Golf mk4 gt tdi 110bhp

I've just bought myself a 1998 mk4 gt tdi 110 needs quite a bit of work doing to get it healthy. This will be my 5th mk4 and this will be the first one I have had as a project. What are people's thoughts do I try and bring it back to how it looked when it come out of the showroom engine and all. Or do I put my hand deep into my pocket and make this an on going project and put some serious upgrades into this. I have thought that trying to get it to showroom standards would add value with it being classed as a antique once it's 25 years old I have full service history the car has covered 128k stacks of paper work for her. I'll be uploading pics soon as she stands now and I'll continue to post as I work on her too so you can see the progress this is the first time I have ever done something like this and I can't wait to get started.
