Acitvating windows on used lap top

Acitvating windows on used lap top
just bought a second hand laptop. worked for a while but then came up with "let's activate windows" it runs on "windows xp" does this mean the software is snide? dont want to get envolved with the old bent software so i thought id ask

the lap top should have on it a window's xp S number thats all you need to put in! it looks like when they dropped the system they never registered it!
