get a thermostat which has a lower temperature range.

i.e. a lower one than what you have now.

the lower the temp. the earlier it kicks in

a THERMOSTAT is NOT the same as a fan switch!

and yes get yourself a nice shiny new fan switch, less than 20quid from ford (you can use a cossie on whichj i think is a few degrees lower if you like)

also your gauge is probably inaccurate aswell

how will changing the thermostat make the fan cut in earlier?
all that will do is shortly prolong the time it take to get to said temp.
what you need is a fan switch that cuts in at a lower temp or, as previously mentioned, an override switch

if i get a lower temp thermostat it won't alter when the fan comes in will it?!

all it will do is take longer to get up the current fan cutting in temp won't it?

i'd like the fan to cut in earlier if possible

then you will need a different switch that switches at a lower temp

or

a manual override switch (wire in parallel with fan switch)

ive got a (brown?) XR2 fan switch and on my series 1 it kicks the fan in bang on the first quarter line, bit too early maybe but will do for when i get a nice big shiny pro alloy or GRS cooler

What matters is the temp it kicks in at, not where the needle is pointing on the (inaccurate) gauge!
